The girls of Kappa participate in philanthropy at three different levels.
First, there is philanthropy at the local level. Once a year the Kappa’s of the Gamma Theta Chapter devote an entire week toward raising money for their community partner, the Iowa Heart Connection. During this week, Kappas hold an event called Kappa Kasino; where neighboring sorority and fraternities are invited into the Kappa house for a fun night of casino playing! Lucky girls, dealers, blackjack, roulette, raffles, and a variety of other games are all part of this exciting night! This event has been a great success for the past four years of its existence and has been a great way to get people exited to help raise money for the community.
Second, there is philanthropy at the national level. Since 2004 Kappas all over the country have participated in a program called Reading is Fundamental (RIF). RIF gets Kappas to be involved, by reading to children at local elementary schools and libraries, through the donation of books and other reading materials, and also by mentoring young children in local, RIF- associated schools.
The final level of philanthropy Kappas are involved with is raising money for is the RoseMcgill Fund, which exists to help Kappas in times of need. Whether a Kappa is currently a member of their chapter or has been an alumna for a number of years, this fund is available when the need arises.
"What I love about being Philanthropy Chair is that I get to see what my sisters do behind the scenes. I get to have fun with them like everyone else, but then I also get to see what drives them. Some of my sisters love working with little kids, others have a passion for working with campus ministries or cancer research. One Kappa may organize a specific volunteer project, and other sisters will help her out. What bonds us is that we all have a cause, and at the same time, we're all eager to help someone else with theirs.
